Knin Fortress is a protected urban ensemble, registered in the Register of Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Croatia as a monument of zero category, ie a monument of special national interest. It is one of the symbols of Croatian statehood. It is one of the largest and oldest European fortresses. It originates from IX. century, and got its final look at the beginning of the XVIII. century. It is one of the largest Croatian fortifications and the second largest military fortification in Europe. It occupies an area of as much as 123,143 m2. It can be divided into five parts: Gornji grad, Srednji grad, Kaštel Lab, Donji grad, and Belveder. Each of these parts of the fortress can also be considered an independent fortified city. It is a living cultural monument and represents the strongest tourist asset of Knin.

The Knin Museum, founded in 1969, takes care of the Fortress, with a permanent exhibition of archeological, ethnographic and geological-paleontological material.
